Examples of Our Work

During our nearly 20-year history, Syncro Medical has worked for clients in many sectors of the health care industry. Following are selected examples of recent engagements.

The extent of Syncro Medical’s involvement is entirely dependent on individual client needs. In some cases, Syncro is asked to handle all of the software design, implementation and test for their new products. In other cases (where the client has their own software department), Syncro is brought in to help with selected modules that their internal engineering staff doesn’t have the bandwidth or skill set to handle themselves. In many projects, Syncro Medical also performs user interface and technical prototyping in order to accelerate requirements definition.

In all of our engagements, Syncro complies with FDA process, and utilizes its considerable expertise in medical product design and implementation.

Patient Monitoring

Vital-Sign Monitors

To accelerate time to market for the next generation of this client’s product line, Syncro Medical played a lead role in designing and implementing a new, high performance user interface. As part of the UI re-engineering effort, we successfully introduced state of the art software technologies to render realtime waveform displays and extensive parametric data.

Syncro Medical further assisted the client by architecting a realtime database system optimized for the product’s memory-constrained environment. When implemented by Syncro, the new database system facilitated realtime capture and storage of patient data for subsequent clinical review.

Syncro also integrated external interfaces for both data acquisition (e.g., SpO2, ECG, BIS, and Spirometry sensors), and data output (to specialized printers).

Wireless ECG Monitoring System

Because its internal engineering staff was fully booked with other projects, this client engaged Syncro Medical to provide the complete software engineering effort for a new monitoring system concept. Development of the device, which provides continuous wireless ECG monitoring of at-risk patients, began with a sketch on the whiteboard. Syncro performed requirements analysis, design, implementation and test of the networked, desktop-based monitoring application.   Having received FDA approval, the product is now being marketed and Syncro is providing ongoing support as new features are added.

Web server-based Patient Monitor

Recognizing a gap in its internal bandwidth and technical capabilities, this client turned to Syncro Medical to web-enable its central nurses station product line. We designed and implemented a web server-based application to facilitate remote monitoring and display capability of its central nurses station via desktop browsers.

Imaging and Visualization Systems

Intravascular Imaging System

As part of its development strategy, this large, multinational firm decided not to invest in an internal software staff and instead established a long-term relationship with Syncro Medical for both new product development and sustaining engineering. Syncro created the software architecture and designed the user interface for a completely new, next-generation intravascular ultrasound device. Under very tight product release deadlines, Syncro successfully implemented the new system in full compliance with FDA process, including realtime data acquisition, high performance image processing and rendering, and DICOM archiving. Syncro continues to provide ongoing maintenance, support and major software upgrades for the product.

(C#, .NET, custom controls, DirectX/GDI, Windows XP, Rational XDE)

DICOM Viewer

Having implemented full DICOM archiving capability for this firm’s imaging system, Syncro Medical then designed and implemented a custom Windows application to facilitate viewing of specialized DICOM-based archives.

(C#, .NET, Windows XP)

Laser Spectroscopy-based Plaque Detection

This startup company is developing technologies to determine the content of atherosclerotic plaque, as an indication of whether plaque rupture is likely to occur. The company engaged Syncro to be its complete software staff, providing full software requirements, design, implementation, test and process compliance for a custom console. The application handles commands from the user, and collects data from a specialized catheter and CCD camera.  The results are processed through custom spectral analysis software, and then displayed to help detect suspect lesions and map their location within the coronary arteries.

Clinical Laboratory Instruments

Immunoassay Instrument Product Line

During our nearly 10-year relationship with this firm, Syncro Medical has assisted with nearly every aspect of their immunoassay instruments. Applying engineering teams of varying size and specialized expertise, Syncro has helped accelerate development time for robotics applications, LIS interfaces, realtime embedded control, database development and user interface for this firm’s immunoassay instruments product line.

Integrated Chemistry System LIS and OPC

In order to keep its internal development staff focused on the final stages of implementation for a complex system upgrade, this client utilized Syncro Medical to handle several ‘non-core’ tasks. For example, Syncro was engaged to implement the Laboratory Information System (LIS) interface for the next generation chemistry analysis system. The LIS interface connects the instrument’s informatics layer to the external protocol via an ASTM-compatible translation component. Syncro Medical also implemented a suite of Power on Self Test (POST) routines. And we implemented an OPC (OLE for Process Control) interface to provide standards-based external communication and control.

Other Medical Instruments

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) System

This startup firm engaged Syncro Medical to function as its software department for the development of its first-to-market TMS system. Under the guidance of the client’s R&D executive, Syncro’s engineering team worked alongside other outsource firms to design and implement the new system. Syncro developed software that handles clinician user interaction and manages the TMS therapy session.  Full patient prescription/treatment information is maintained in a separate database application developed by Syncro Medical.

(C#, .NET, custom controls, SQL)

Defibrillator

This company engaged Syncro to create a comprehensive software-based simulator in order to obtain user feedback and thereby refine requirements for a next-generation defibrillator/ monitor. Syncro developed the simulator and then provided rapid turn-around as new and modified UI concepts were introduced for subsequent user meetings. Syncro then performed complete software requirements analysis and traceability for the product.

(C++, PEG, Integrity; CaliberRM)

Sleep and Respiratory System

In order to meet aggressive product release deadlines, this client engaged Syncro Medical to take on certain portions of their product development effort. Syncro prototyped and developed the user interface for a next-generation ventilator. In addition, Syncro Medical implemented modem-based external communication from the patient device to the responsible clinician.

(Embedded C++, PEG, Windows/ThreadX)

Cystometry Application

Because this client didn’t have in-house Windows development capability, Syncro was engaged to create a Windows application to operate in conjunction with their urodynamic diagnostic instrument.  The HIPAA-compliant application developed by Syncro Medical collects data from the microprocessor-based instrument, and then summarizes, displays and reports the findings for patient studies.
